US Secretary of State raises bigger challenge than nuclear weapons

Aug 01, 2023

Washington [US], August 1: Appearing on 60 Minutes Australia on July 30, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the world is facing many problems. When asked between Russia's nuclear threat and record-breaking temperatures, which is more serious, Blinken said climate change is certainly an existential challenge for humanity.
Basically, humanity is living in an industrial boom , which creates many problems, he said. Therefore, everyone must be able to multitask to handle multiple challenges at the same time.
Mr. Blinken's interview with Australian media was made while he was on a trip to this country to promote relations between the two countries, especially in the security aspect in the Indo-Pacific. According to Blinken, another existing problem in this region is the threat from China, as Beijing is increasingly assertive in expanding its military capabilities.
When asked about China, Secretary of State Blinken said it is one of the most complicated relationships the US has. According to him, Washington has an obligation to manage relations with Beijing responsibly. He also noted that in the bilateral relationship, there are obvious competitive aspects and that could be the main focus. However, there are also areas where the two sides must discuss their differences, and there are issues where the two countries can consider working together for mutual benefit. The White House quoted Blinken as saying that Washington is working to maintain contact with Beijing, through visits by US officials to China and communication channels. He expressed hope that the Chinese side will make similar moves.
