Jul 27, 2023

United Nations, July 27: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday announced the appointment of Tatiana Molcean of Moldova as the next Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
Molcean's appointment comes as a result of her "remarkable expertise and extensive experience" in the public sector, international cooperation, and development, according to a press note issued by the UN chief's office.
The UN chief expressed his gratitude to Olga Algayerova of Slovakia, the outgoing executive secretary, for her dedicated service and commitment to the organization. Algayerova's contributions have been "invaluable" in advancing the UNECE's mission and objectives, the press note said.
Molcean brings with her over two decades of experience in the public sector, providing her with "a strong foundation" to lead the UNECE. She currently serves as the permanent representative of the Republic of Moldova to the United Nations Office, World Trade Organization and other international organizations in Geneva.
UNECE was set up in 1947 by the UN Economic and Social Council. As one of five regional commissions of the United Nations, its major aim is to promote pan-European economic integration. UNECE includes 56 member states in Europe, North America and Asia.
