More than 70 killed after clashes in Africa's Somaliland

Mogadishu [Somalia], February 10: The death toll has risen to at least 74, with about 200 injured, in the latest clashes in the East African region of Somaliland, the community spokesman for the embattled town of Las Anod said on Thursday.
Riots broke out in the town on Monday, shortly after three provinces in the breakaway region of Somaliland in the Horn of Africa announced they wanted to become part of Somalia again.
Sool, Sanaag and Cayn provinces make up about a third of Somaliland's territory. They are claimed by both Somaliland and the neighbouring semi-autonomous Somali region of Puntland.
Violence in the region has been recurring for weeks.
In response, the Somaliland military increased its presence there this week."Our town has never been under such heavy artillery and mortar fire," said GaradJama Ali, the community spokesperson. (dpa)
